Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord — the Medieval Sandbox War RPG
TaleWorlds' open-world medieval epic: build a warband from peasants, trade and scheme across Calradia, and lead hundreds of soldiers in real-time battles. Mods are pulling a wave of players back right now — here's what's actually worth your time.
Why it's trending: the October mod wave
Two headline mods landed this month and pulled lapsed players back.
Limitless
Breaks the hardcoded 2,040-agent battlefield cap — battles can scale to ~32,700 agents, with a removable corpse limit (up to 16,000 bodies) and reinforcement flow intact. Released Oct 17 by BlocTheWorker. Caveats: game version 1.4.8 only, manual install into Modules — do not use Vortex — and keep the siege cap at 2,040 or agents spawn-stuck.
More Arena Events — Grand Melee
Adds a four-team seasonal tournament that lands in a randomly chosen town, runs alongside normal life, and makes the arena feel like part of the world rather than a menu.
The evergreen stack
For a fresh install: BLSE launcher + Mod Configuration Menu first, then Diplomacy, Improved Garrisons and Realistic Battle Mod to patch what vanilla leaves thin — diplomacy, garrison management, battle AI and the late-game grind.
What the game actually is
- 1Sandbox campaign
Start as a nobody in Calradia — fight in arenas, run trade caravans, do mercenary work — and grow into a clan leader, a vassal, or the founder of a new kingdom.
- 2You fight in the battle
Unlike pure strategy games, you command troops and swing a sword in third person — formations, orders and personal combat all at once.
- 3Living world sim
Prices, wars and noble feuds run on a simulated economy and politics layer — villages produce, caravans trade, kingdoms declare war without you.
- 4Sieges are the showcase
Multi-stage assaults with siege towers, rams and catapults — now literally thousands of agents deep if Limitless is installed.
FAQ
Is Bannerlord finished?
It left early access in 2022 and continues to get patches and DLC (War Sails being the naval expansion line). The single-player sandbox is complete and heavily moddable.
How big can battles get?
Vanilla caps the field at 2,040 agents (each rider and horse count separately). The Limitless mod raises that to roughly 32,700 — your PC becomes the limit instead.
Where do I get the mods?
Nexus Mods hosts both Limitless and More Arena Events. Install manually into the game's Modules folder; Limitless specifically warns against Vortex installs.
Is it good without mods?
Yes — a full campaign loop works out of the box. Mods mainly fix late-game diplomacy, garrison chores and battle scale, so first playthroughs are fine vanilla.
