Middle Word Game - Play the Daily Puzzle from PZL
Two words, one hidden in between: find the common word that sits alphabetically in the middle, in ten guesses. Each guess tells you the direction and the exact dictionary distance - walk the alphabet, don't wander it.
How a round works
- 1Two anchor words appear
Somewhere between them in the dictionary sits one common word in its basic form. You don't pick from a list - you name it.
- 2Read the distance number
Every guess shows exactly how many dictionary words separate it from the answer, and sorts itself above (before) or below (after).
- 3Narrow the bracket
Guesses before the answer stack above, guesses after stack below - ten guesses turns a whole dictionary into a shrinking corridor.
- 4Land the common word
The answer is always a headword - a plain, everyday word, never an obscure plural or conjugated verb.
Strategy that actually works
Jump when the gap is big
Early guesses are probes, not answers. If the distance is still in the hundreds, leap to a word that splits the remaining gap instead of creeping letter by letter.
List words when the gap is small
Once the distance drops to single digits, stop jumping - name the ordinary words that live in that pocket of the alphabet.
Spelling beats meaning
"Apple" and "apply" are dictionary neighbors with nothing in common. Forget what words mean; think about how they're spelled.
Think headwords
When you're close, guess the dictionary form - the plain word, not its plural, its -ing form or a name.
FAQ
Is the Middle Word game free?
Yes - free to play in your browser, with a new puzzle every day and older puzzles kept in the archive.
How many guesses do I get?
Ten - enough to binary-search the dictionary if you spend them on splitting gaps instead of fishing for the answer early.
What does the number on my guess mean?
Exactly how many dictionary words sit between your guess and the answer - plus whether yours comes before or after. Distance 0 means you've won.
Does word meaning matter?
No - everything is alphabetical order. Two words can be neighbors in the dictionary and total strangers in meaning.
What is PZL?
