Ynis Witrin - Isle of Glass
An obscure 1991 Atari ST action-RPG by Funny Man Software. The 13 Treasures of Arthurian Britain are scattered across a huge map - explore it overhead, then hit Magnify to drop into close-up Gauntlet-style brawls. Rated 92% by ST Format, and almost impossible to find information about today.
Starting the game inside the emulator
The disk boots to the classic green Atari ST desktop rather than straight into the game - two double-clicks get you in.
- 1Wait for the green desktop
The emulator loads a real Atari ST boot. Give it 10-20 seconds until the Desktop/File/View/Options menu bar appears.
- 2Open the YNIS WITRIN disk
Double-click the disk icon labelled
YNIS WITRIN. A window opens showing the disk contents. - 3Run START_UP.PRG
Double-click
START_UP.PRG(or similarly named .PRG file) in that window. The game itself takes over the screen from there.
What the game actually is
Almost nothing about Ynis Witrin survives online - here is what the game itself and the one deep-dive playthrough show.
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Quest | Recover the 13 Treasures of Arthurian Britain - a Celtic myth checklist spread over one large overworld map |
| Two view modes | An overhead map for travelling, plus a Magnify button that zooms into a close-up where you collect and fight |
| Combat | Gauntlet-style arcade bashing in the magnified view - simple, fast, joystick-driven |
| RPG layer | Magic items to find and a life force to keep healthy - light but present |
| Tech trivia | Written in STOS BASIC by Mike Afford, published by MicroMagic as a budget title in 1991 - and ST Format still gave it 92% |
