Dressmaker is a paid download, not a browser game — but a free prototype is still up on the developers' itch.io page (Windows/Mac/Linux download), if you want to try the crafting loop before buying the full version.

How a dress gets made

The sim follows real dressmaking — every choice you make visibly changes the finished garment.

  1. 1
    Take a commission

Townsfolk request custom dresses for specific events and personal tastes — each job states its requirements.

  2. 2
    Buy fabric and design

Cotton, linen, wool, silk, velvet and more; sketch the design in your sketchbook with fabric samples and appliqué.

  3. 3
    Arrange and cut the pattern

Aligned to the grain or cut on the bias — how you place pieces on the fabric literally shapes the final dress.

  4. 4
    Sew it together

Feed panels through the sewing machine to stitch the garment.

  5. 5
    Decorate and deliver

Buttons, bows, lace trims and appliqué go wherever you like — then hand it over for reputation and coin, or put your own designs in the shop window to sell off the rack.

What's in the loop

Commissions

A full town of customers and a calendar of events — satisfy (or sabotage) them with your tailoring.

Reputation & coin

Finished dresses pay both — reputation draws the bigger commissions.

Free-form shop window

Sell pre-made dresses off the rack alongside made-to-order work.

The cat

You can pet it. Confirmed feature.

FAQ

Is Dressmaker free?

The full game is $14.99 on Steam. The free prototype on the devs' itch.io page is a rougher early build — still enough to feel the core loop.

Is there a Dressmaker browser or mobile version?

No — it runs on Windows and macOS only. There's no phone, browser or console edition.

Do I need to know real sewing?

No — it's inspired by real dressmaking (grain, bias, pattern layout) but teaches everything in-game.

Who made it?

Cozy Lives, the cozy offshoot of Free Lives (the South African studio behind Anger Foot and Terra Nil), with music by Meydän and writing by Kerstin Hall.
