Quick pick: want a fresh map fast? Use the in-game Random World Generation — it's already in your client. Want to actually edit terrain and POIs on a map? The new community 7d2d Map Editor (jayfitt, released Oct 24, 2026) is the tool people are talking about right now.

Version check matters: worlds must be generated on (or for) the same game version as the server. Old NitroGen maps are Alpha 19 era and won't work on the current game.

Making a map with the built-in generator

  1. 1
    New Game → Advanced Generation

Choose Random Gen instead of the preset Navezgane map to open the world generation options.

  2. 2
    Set the parameters

World size, name/seed, and how much of each biome and town type you want. Generate a preview before committing.

  3. 3
    Generate

The game builds the world folder — big maps take a few minutes.

  4. 4
    Play or upload

Play locally right away, or upload the world folder to a dedicated server (next section).

Getting a custom map onto a server

The part most people actually search for — the upload is easy once you know the two things to change.

  1. 1
    Generate on the same version

Create the world on the same game build your server runs — version mismatch is the #1 cause of broken uploads.

  2. 2
Upload the world folder via FTP

Copy the generated world's folder into Data/Worlds on the server.

  3. 3
    Point serverconfig.xml at it

Set the GameWorld value in serverconfig.xml to your world's folder name.

  4. 4
    Restart without saving config

Restart the server normally — don't use "Save Config & Restart" if your panel would overwrite the XML edit.

FAQ

What is the 7d2d Map Editor?

A new community-made editing tool by jayfitt, published October 24, 2026 and updated frequently — it's built for editing maps, POIs and environments rather than just generating seeds.

Does 7 Days to Die have an official map editor?

The game ships with Random World Generation for creating maps, but there's no full in-game terrain/POI editor — that's the gap community tools fill.

Can I edit a map I've already played on?

Generated worlds can be moved and edited as files, but edits to a live save are risky — back up the save folder first, and expect POI/terrain edits to only show cleanly in unexplored chunks.

Do players need the map files to join my server?

No — the server sends the world to clients. Only the server needs the custom world in Data/Worlds.
