Goal: Play Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic without running out of lives, see every pattern including Flandre, and still understand what Challenge Mode will not give you. Players are treating Challenge Mode as a practice and see-the-whole-game tool, not a replacement for a real clear. That distinction is what most people are getting stuck on.

What Challenge Mode Actually Does

  • 1
You keep going after every hit. Lives do not run out.
  • 2
    Every death (pichuun) is counted.

The point of the mode is to beat yesterday's death count, not to win with infinite continues.

  • 3
You can walk the full main campaign and look at every spell.
  • 4
Endings play on standard mode only.

Challenge Mode is for learning patterns, then going back.

  • 5
Extra and Flandre are not free.

Several players report they had to unlock Extra the normal way (Normal+ no-continue), then farm Extra in Challenge Mode. One player unlocked Extra, then ate 29 deaths just tasting Flandre.

Confirmed rule: Endings and Extra come from standard mode, not from dying infinitely. A few players think Challenge Mode good-end or Extra needs 5 or fewer misses on Normal+. Treat that as unverified day-one rumor.
Steam achievements: Many still pop in Challenge Mode, so you can collect systems progress while learning.

1Use the Mode the Way Players Are Using It

1Launch New Classic, Not Classic

Challenge Mode and unlimited lives exist on the remaster (New Classic). Classic is the 2002 recreation and is Japanese-only.

2Turn on Challenge Mode Before the Run
  • 1
Select it from the New Classic mode or game-mode options when starting a run.

Players refer to it as Challenge Mode.

  • 2
Confirm you see infinite lives and a death counter, not a normal life stock.
3Turn on the QoL That Makes EoSD Learnable
  • 1
Use focus (Shift) so you can actually see the hitbox.

New Classic adds a visible hitbox while focused. This is the difference between guess and pray old EoSD and this version.

  • 2
    Use the boss marker.

Another later-Touhou helper players keep mentioning.

4Pick Reimu Homing (Reimu B) for First Full Tours
  • 1
Players who are not shmup-regulars keep posting that Reimu homing got them through Challenge Mode quickly.

One person unlocked a good ending path on their second full Challenge run with Reimu homing. Homing covers more of the screen so you can watch bullets instead of lining shots.

  • 2
Switch to Marisa later if you want raw damage.
5Play the Whole Game Once Just to See It
  • 1
Do not bomb-hoard. Die, note the pattern, keep going.
  • 2
First-day death totals people are posting: 20-miss Normal as a personal goal, 29 on Extra Flandre, 40+ on a first Extra attempt, even 200+ on a joke Lunatic clear. Those numbers are normal for a first pass.
6After Stage 6, Switch to Standard Mode for the Real Clear
  • 1
Goal: Normal or higher, no continue.

That is what players are using to unlock Extra and the real ending. Challenge Mode is the rehearsal.

7Use Spell Practice on the Cards That Ate Most of Your Death Counter
  • 1
New Classic has official spell practice (not in original EoSD).

Practice mode still starts with a small life stock (players complained it is still 2 lives), so use Challenge Mode for full-stage flow and Spell Practice for single cards.

8Once Extra Is Unlocked, Farm Flandre in Challenge Mode
  • 1
Do not expect a clean first Extra.

Treat 20 to 30 deaths as a scouting run, then cut that number.

9Track One Number: Deaths This Run vs Last Run

That is the design intent people keep repeating: infinite lives so you can finish, death counter so the run still has a score of how much you improved.

Decision Points

GoalUse This
See Remilia or all main-game spells tonightChallenge Mode, any difficulty
Good ending and Extra unlockStandard mode, Normal+, no continue
Learn one nasty cardSpell Practice, then Challenge Mode full stage
First characterReimu homing
Want Extra Flandre nowUnlock Extra first. Challenge Mode will not skip that gate for most people
I only care about Steam stampsChallenge Mode appears to count a lot of them
The number one complaint today: If you only play Challenge Mode, you will see the mansion and still sit behind the Extra lock.

Common Mistakes

Practical First Session (Do This Tonight)

  • 1
New Classic, then Challenge Mode, then Easy or Normal, then Reimu homing.
  • 2
    Finish Stage 6.

Write down deaths per stage, not just the total.

  • 3
Spell-practice the two stages with the most deaths.

    Usually 4 and 6.

  • 4
Standard mode, same shot, Normal, no continue.
  • 5
When Extra unlocks, Challenge Mode Extra and start cutting the Flandre death count.
The loop players are actually running on launch day: Infinite lives to learn, limited lives to unlock, infinite lives again to farm Extra.
