With 1-2 heroes, farming is painfully slow - bad XP, low gold, and almost no meaningful chest drops. Three heroes multiply everything: clear speed, loot, and XP. The 3rd slot unlock (150k gold via Rune tree) is the single biggest power spike. Once you have it, the right team formation determines how fast everything else goes.

1Unlock the 3rd Slot First

Save 150k gold and unlock the 3rd hero slot from the Rune tree. Nothing else pays off faster - delay all other rune spending until this is done.

Keep the game open on your taskbar. Offline mode gives basic gold/XP but zero chest drops. Chests are the only source of meaningful gear. Active taskbar farming is mandatory.

Key Decision Points

F2P vs DLC - do I need Hunter?
Knight/Priest/Ranger is a strong zero-cost team that carries all early and mid content. Hunter (DLC) raises the damage ceiling but is not required. Get it only after you have the base trio running well.
When should I add Sorcerer?
After mid-game when your Priest has enough tank stats to reliably absorb frontline hits. Sorcerer replaces Ranger in boss-heavy content. Do not make the swap if Priest keeps dying up front.
Knight or Priest as frontline - which is better?
Priest is preferred because her self-heal and party buffs outweigh Knight's pure defense. Knight is the safer pick only if your gear is too weak to keep Priest alive in the front slot.
Farming feels slow even with 3 slots - what to fix?
Check in this order: Is the game actively running on your taskbar? Is auto-chest opening enabled? Is Movement Speed stacked on accessories? Fix these before chasing combat runes.
