Star Wars: Galactic Racer - Online Population and How Lobbies Fill
Launched October 6 with ~15,400 Steam peak plus PS5 and Xbox in the same crossplay pool. Races backfill empty slots with AI, so events always start - the real limiters are the 3-player party cap and the rule that a fresh lobby needs a third unique player.
The real question: not "is the population dead" - it is how to land in races with humans and get friends into the same lobby on day one. Matchmaking fills existing races first, then needs at least two unique searching players to open a new one.
1How Matchmaking Actually Fills a Race
-
1
Queue any online mode - it tries existing races first
You get dropped into a race or Tour that still has open human slots.
-
2
Mid-Tour joins enter as spectator
You watch until the next race, then get resources so you are not permanently behind on the build.
-
3
New races need at least two unique searching players
A party of exactly two does not count - you still need one more person outside the party before a fresh lobby is created.
-
4
Regional preference first, then expands across regions
If your region is empty, search widens automatically.
-
5
Caps: 12 for Quick Race and Multiplayer Tour; 8 for podracing modes
Unfilled slots become AI racers so the event starts instead of waiting forever.
2Playing With Friends Right Now
-
1
Open Multiplayer and use the Party button (upper-right)
Invite from the platform friends list. Cross-platform invites run through Epic Online Services - on Steam you only need an Epic account to manage non-Steam friends.
-
2
Party cap is 3 players - being raised to 6
The increase is targeted for the first few weeks after launch. No private or custom lobbies yet.
-
3
Leave crossplay on
It is enabled by default and can be turned off - but turning it off cuts you out of the shared PC + PS5 + Xbox pool.
-
4
Xbox: online tiles say "no access" after enabling Game Pass mid-session?
Open the in-game party feature once - it rechecks the entitlement.
3Decision Points
| Situation | Do this |
|---|---|
| Want humans fast | Queue Quick Race (12 slots, short commitment) over a six-race Tour. |
| Duo party waiting for a new lobby | It will not start without a third unique player. Add a friend or accept landing in a running race with room. |
| Podracing vs speeders | Pods cap at 8 and cannot mix with landspeeders, bikes, or skim speeders. Thinner human pool means more AI fill at off hours. |
| Want private leagues | Not possible yet - public matchmaking plus the upcoming 6-player party is the only path. |
Mistakes That Waste Queue Time
- Queuing as a party of 2 expecting a new race. It will not start until a third unique player appears.
- Turning crossplay off on day one. That splits you from the majority of the population.
- Expecting a full 12-human grid. AI backfill is intentional when search cannot fill every slot.
- Idling a PS5 in standby 24+ hours, then matchmaking. It can fail until you fully restart the title.
- Disconnecting mid-race while in a party. Reconnecting from the main menu does not fully restore the same party.
