No rat swarms. Stealth is no longer the default playstyle. Combat (sword plus dagger plus grappling hook) is the main loop. Stealth only matters in specific underground horror sections and when you choose to ambush soldiers. Players asking this almost always want two things: "Will I get the rat-swarm set pieces I came for?" and "Do I still have to sneak everywhere?" The answers are no and only sometimes.

1What Actually Replaced the Rats

The Creature
The Macula still exists, but it does not appear as plague rats here. Instead, later underground areas introduce the creature, a long, smoky, snake-like thing that hunts you in the dark. It tracks glowing blue footprints you leave if you walk or run normally, and the sparkly dust that comes off Sophia when she is out in the open. It cannot enter bright lantern or sunlight pools. Those pools are your safe zones, same role light used to play against rats.

2How to Handle the Creature

This is the section that feels closest to old Plague Tale tension. Players report it hitting hardest in Chapter 6 ("What Lies Beneath") and similar dark temple or undercroft stretches.

Decision point: if you can see the next lantern and the creature is exhaling, sprint. If light is sparse and it is inhaling, stay crouched behind cover and wait.

3Human Enemies - When Stealth Is Optional

Most soldier encounters are meant to be fought. Sophia is built for it. You can still stealth:

If you prefer not to fight every pack, look for high ground or a flanking path first. Many players still sneak the first group in an area, then fight the rest once they have the rhythm.
Stealth kill
Isolated or unaware enemies
Get above or behind, drop for an execution, or grapple an isolated archer.
Fight
Multiple alerted soldiers or arena
Narrative or easy difficulty will auto-parry if the combat feels too much.

Common Mistakes

Community consensus: come for Sophia's swordplay and the Minotaur and Theseus story, not for rats. The tension of moving through darkness toward light is still there, just with one monster instead of thousands of rodents.
