Core Goal: Survive Early Game, Then Build Self-Sufficiency

Build 42 makes combat more punishing via muscle strain, raises the value of rural skills like foraging and animal husbandry, and adds livestock as a long-term survival pillar. Your first priority is surviving the early-to-mid game without dying to muscle strain in combat. Then transition to sustainable food and water via foraging, hunting, farming, and livestock before canned goods and city loot dry up.

Muscle Strain Is the #1 Killer of New Runs

Build 42 overhauled combat stamina. Your arms and legs strain from swinging weapons, pushing, and stomping. High Strength and weapon skill reduce how fast strain builds. Painkillers reduce the pain moodle but do not remove the strain itself - only time heals it. Treat strain as a hard limit on how long you can fight.

1 Character Creation and Early Combat

Prefer Fire Officer + Strong (or Stout). This starts you with high Strength (often 10), solid Fitness, some axe skill, and better resistance to arm strain. Strength and weapon skill directly reduce how fast strain builds.

  • Fight only 1-3 zombies at a time - lure them away from groups using sound or movement, then use fences, windows, trees, or walls to trip them.
  • Push (Spacebar) to create space - stomping grounded zombies shifts strain to legs instead of arms, giving your arms a break.
  • Alternate weapon swings with pushes and stomps - when arms are strained, rely more on shoving and environmental kills.
  • Rest frequently - sit or lie down even if not fully exhausted. Do not over-exert carrying loot into fights.
Running away and returning later is usually safer than fighting through a large group. High Strength plus weapon skill later lets you fight much longer before straining.

2 Day 1-2 Immediate Priorities

  • Secure the spawn house - turn off noise sources, close or hang sheets on windows, stay crouched near glass.
  • Grab essential supplies - reliable weapon (frying pan, kitchen knife, later crowbar or axe), bag, water containers, perishable food, bandages, disinfectant, lighter or matches.
  • Stockpile water from sinks, toilets, and baths - shutoff can hit in the 0-30 day window. After shutoff, collect rain in pots, pans, and buckets, then boil it.

3 Level Critical Skills Early

  • Foraging - essential especially for rural play. Search radius grows with skill. Focus categories unlock progressively (berries, mushrooms, insects, plants, tracks). Rain helps certain finds; stay rested, calm, and well-lit while foraging.
  • Carpentry - fastest method is barricading and unbarricading windows with plank + hammer + crowbar. Watch TV plus skill books. Build rain collectors and fortifications early. Note: disassembling furniture no longer gives Carpentry XP in Build 42 (unlike Build 41) but still yields nails.
  • Carving and Knapping - carve wood pieces and make stone knives or spears for early weapons and XP. Harden spear tips over a campfire.
  • Strength and Fitness - do push-ups and eat high-calorie foods. Higher levels reduce strain and improve carrying and combat endurance.
  • Fishing - craft a rod (wooden rod + twine or wire + paperclip or nail hook). Use bugs, maggots from corpses, or ground meat as bait. Fish where you see bubbles.
  • Welding - level by barricading and removing metal sheets with a propane torch. Refill from tanks; needs light to work.

4 Food, Water, and Long-Term Sustainability

Canned food is temporary. Prioritize foraging, hunting (roadkill or tracking animals via prints and droppings), trapping, and farming for long-term food supply.

Livestock (major Build 42 feature):

  • Sheep - highly valued for milk (make butter for calories), manageable fences, fast breeding. Best overall livestock choice.
  • Chickens - give eggs but can overpopulate, phase through some gates, or die if hutches get dirty. Store fertilized eggs in fridges or vending machines to control numbers.
  • Cows - wander and break fences more than sheep. Higher maintenance.
  • Pigs - generally considered less useful by the community.
Keep animals fed (grass via hands or scythe, troughs craftable at low Carpentry) and watered (rain fills troughs). Critical: stay away if you have a cold - coughs and sneezes stress animals like gunshots and can cause breakouts. Animals in loaded cells last a long time with basic care.

5 Base Location and Fortification

  • Choose a base near water and foraging zones - away from dense zombie areas, with multiple escape routes.
  • Build rain collectors early - before water shutoff hits. Multiple collectors ensure steady supply.
  • Start crops in proper seasons - plan rotation and preserve food with drying racks.
  • Plan for generators - need Electrical skill or the manual. Or go fully off-grid once power fails.
  • Cook properly - use griddle or pan with carved utensils for better hunger restoration, happiness, and cooking XP.

6 Key Decision Points

  • Fight vs flee: If strain is building or the group is large, flee and return later or use environment. Only commit when you can control numbers.
  • Stay in town vs go rural: Towns have loot but denser zombies and eventual scarcity. Rural favors foraging, animals, and hunting but requires those skills earlier.
  • Vehicle use: Useful for transport and gas stockpiling (siphon into wrecks), but new obstacles, wrecks, and plant collisions can wreck cars. Drive carefully.
  • Base location: Defensible plus resources beats pure isolation. Multiple exits matter for survival.
