Over The Top WWI First-Person View Overhaul
The August 2026 first-person overhaul finally makes FP feel like a real mode. Here is how to set it up so you can fight in trenches without the old jank, and know when to stay in it vs swap back to third.
Pressing V used to be a camera gimmick: no iron sights, crosshair not matching the barrel, walking fire spraying, FP breaking after you went down. The US Expeditionary Forces patch rebuilt FP with new gun animations, bolt work, and reloads. Hardcore servers now force first person. Players still lose because they ADS-expect, hug cover, or never bind free look.
1Do This in Order
-
1
Toggle and stay in FP after spawn
Default bind: V (first person). Confirm it after you respawn from downed. That used to dump you back to third person. The late-August patch restored FP after downed respawn. If it still flips, check Key Bindings, Player, First Person.
-
2
Settings that make the overhaul usable
Raise FOV (devs added a higher first-person FOV cap in hotfix USA.2). Turn First Person Headbobbing off. Turn off Screen Shake, Motion Blur, Depth of Field, Vignette, Chromatic Aberration, Lens Dirt. They hide muzzle and trench lips.
-
3
Bind free look before you leave spawn
Assign Look Around or Free Look (community default: hold Left Alt). It works in first person. Players who skip this get flanked in zig-zag trenches because FP has no shoulder peek. YouTubers and Steam posters treat this as the one OP awareness bind.
-
4
Shoulder swap is for third person. Do not expect it in FP.
B flips camera shoulder offset in 3rd person. In FP that key does nothing useful for peeking. If you need to look around a sandbag without exposing the barrel, free-look or briefly tap V back to 3rd, peek, tap V again.
-
5
Aim like this game, not like an FPS
There are still no real iron sights on most rifles. Center crosshair does not equal barrel. Bullets leave the gun model. If you press your chest into a parapet, the crosshair looks clear and the round hits the bag. Step back a half-body, plant, fire, bolt. Walking fire is still wide.
-
6
If you want forced FP plus deadlier guns, use the server browser
Do not use Quick Match. Open the server browser and look for the playtest Hardcore servers (EU or NA). Rules: first person forced, friendly fire on, suppression from bullets and explosions, wave respawn about 60s, spectate only your team. Population is still thin.
-
7
If FP still feels worse than TPP, you are not broken
A lot of long-time players still run third person as default and only tap V to aim or for immersion. TPP camera tweaks: Shoulder Offset about 0.50 (default 0.28), Height Offset about 0.15 (default -0.1), Zoom Level about -2.0 (default -1.3). Bind Swap Shoulder to a mouse side button.
2Decision Points
| Situation | Choice |
|---|---|
| Regular public server | Mix: TPP for movement and trench awareness, V for the new bolt and reload feel and close fights |
| You want immersion or no 3rd-person wall peek | Hardcore FP-only servers |
| You came from Isonzo and keep missing | Stop expecting ADS. Use the crosshair, stand off cover, shoot then bolt |
| Mortar or held item looks huge or body vanishes | Swap weapon once or leave FP and re-enter. Those were patched. Leftover cases are leftover animation glitches |
| Controller | There is a setting to flip tap or hold for first person and shoulder swap |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating FP like a milsim. No iron sights, high spread, barrel-not-crosshair.
- Hugging the firing step so every shot eats your own cover. Step back a half-body, plant, fire, bolt.
- Never binding free look, then calling FP blind. Hold Left Alt to look around in FP.
- Joining Quick Match and wondering where the FP-only server went. Hardcore is browser-only.
- Playing pre-overhaul muscle memory. Old FP was a camera toggle. New one has real bolt and reload anims. Wait for the bolt to finish.
- Leaving Screen Shake or headbob on after the FOV hotfix, then saying the new view is unreadable. Turn them off.
