Nioh 3
Waira Boss Guide - Perfect No-Damage Strategy
Waira is a blob-like yokai in the Monastic Cave. The key to a perfect run is Burst Breaking the roll, staying at spear range, and draining Ki through the abdomen.
Location: Monastic Cave
Weapon: Spear (Samurai)
Hardest Move: Roll Attack
Core Goal
Beat Waira without taking damage alongside NPC Kajiwara Kagetoki. Community perfect runs emphasize patience, safe pokes, and executing the Burst Break on the roll attack. This is not considered one of Nioh 3's hardest bosses - but the roll's range surprises most players on first attempts.
01
Preparation
Weapon
Spear
Samurai style for safe pokes and range control
Style
Samurai
Best for perfect runs due to distance management
Debuff
Poison
Effective. Skip Scorched, Saturated, Electrified, Paralyzed - all resisted.
Before entering: Clear all nearby Gaki in the flooded cave area. Fighting Waira with adds present is the main reason players take unexpected damage.
02
Fight Flow
Critical rule: When Waira winds up its roll attack - Burst Break it immediately. Do NOT dodge-roll away. The roll covers a surprising range and the delay will catch most dodges.
-
Circle at spear range. Land 1-2 light pokes after each of Waira's attacks. Do not rush or overcommit - side body slams can chain into each other.
-
Target the abdomen. Hits to the abdomen temporarily lower Waira's max Ki. When its Ki is fully depleted, Waira shrinks - press aggressive damage during the shrunk phase.
-
Use Kajiwara Kagetoki. Position so the NPC takes some aggro. He stays aggressive and can land the killing blow - let him contribute especially on first attempts.
-
Burst Break the roll. When you see the roll wind-up animation, execute Burst Break immediately. This is the single most important mechanical skill in this fight.
03
Key Moves Reference
Roll / Power Attack
High Danger
Delayed wind-up, long horizontal range. Burst Break only - do not dodge away.
Body Slam Chain
High Danger
Can chain hits. Punish only after the animation fully ends - never between slam hits.
Underground Attack
Medium
Move laterally, not backward. Spear reach keeps you safe during repositioning.
Fast Projectile
Medium
Move laterally. These mix with underground attacks - stay mobile in the cave arena.
Ki Depleted (Shrunk)
Punish Window
Press full aggression. Abdomen hits refill this window. Waira regrows after recovery.
Key Decision Points
Spear vs. Katana?
Spear in Samurai style is the recommended choice for perfect runs - the distance control removes most of the danger. Katana in low stance works for aggressive Ki drain via kicks but significantly increases the risk of eating a chain attack.
Burst Break vs. Dodge on the roll?
Always Burst Break. The roll has delayed timing and long range specifically designed to catch dodge attempts. This is the one mechanic players must commit to learning for a clean run.
How aggressive to be?
On first kills, use the NPC for aggro and play conservative. For solo perfect runs, control all distance yourself and rely entirely on safe poke windows. Patience wins this fight.
Use Poison or skip debuffs?
Use Poison if you want extra damage pressure during the shrunk window. Skip Scorched, Saturated, Electrified, and Paralyzed - Waira resists all of them.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Rushing combos after body slams. Body slam chains will catch you mid-punish if you do not wait for the full animation end.
- Dodging the roll instead of Burst Breaking. The roll's range and delay are designed to punish dodge attempts specifically.
- Getting greedy during Ki depletion phases. Waira regrows - do not over-extend into its recovery and eat a surprise chain attack.
- Forgetting to clear Gaki before engaging. Adds in the cave arena are the most common cause of accidental damage on otherwise clean runs.
- Underestimating underground attack mix-ups. The cave's tight layout amplifies the surprise factor - stay mobile at all times.
