Hillthorn Demo Card Investigation No-Dialogue Mystery
How to solve the missing-person mystery in the Hillthorn demo using card-based investigation. Card types, action icons, dual-icon combos, gold-border persistence, and mistakes that waste time.
Hillthorn's demo tells the missing-person mystery (Olivia) with zero spoken dialogue. Progress only happens when you match the right action card to the right clue, character, or location card. Most players get stuck because they treat it like a deck-builder or click every card once, then run out of time or miss icons.
How the Card Table Works
Place an action card
Put an action (Investigate, Talk, or Explore) in the top-left slot.
Drop target cards into the new slots
New slots appear after placing the action. Drop one or more target cards into them.
Click the magnifying glass
Click the magnifying glass on the right. It shows a tick if you have already done that exact combo.
Flip new cards and advance time
New cards appear face-down on the tray. Flip them. Time advances with every action.
Card Types at a Glance
Read the Corner Icons
Always look at the tiny icons in the corner of a card. They tell you which actions are valid:
Match the icon to the action
- Magnifying glass = Investigate
- Speech bubble = Talk
- Map pin = Explore
Use both actions on dual-icon cards
Some cards have two icons. Use both actions on them. Players who only Investigate miss Talk results and vice versa.
First-Hour Loop
Start at Mount Hillthorn
Accept the contract when the milestone card appears. That swaps the deck.
Use every matching action immediately
Investigate, Talk, or Explore every card that shows a matching icon. Do not skip the second icon on dual-icon cards.
Explore new location cards
When a new green location card appears, Explore it to change scene. Golden-border cards travel with you.
Use the menu for case notes
Use the top menu for case notes and reminders. It tracks what you have already confirmed.
Re-check corners when unsure
When you are unsure, re-check corners instead of guessing. Wasted actions cost time.
Key Decisions
One icon vs two icons
Always do both if two are shown. Players who only Investigate miss Talk results and vice versa.
Keep or discard
Gold-border = keep. Context (diagonal corners) = leave alone.
Time vs completeness
The clock ticks every action. Prioritize cards that still have unused icons. The magnifying glass tick tells you what is already done.
Scene change timing
Only Explore a green location when you are ready to leave the current table of cards.
Common Mistakes
- Treating context cards as interactable.
- Using only one action on a dual-icon card.
- Ignoring the gold border and losing persistent clues when the scene changes.
- Clicking the same combo again. The tick exists for a reason.
- Playing it like Cultist Simulator randomness instead of directed icon matching. Hillthorn is more linear than it first looks.
