Key principle: Both builds share the same universal scaler - Power + crit multipliers. The difference is the defensive layer: melee adds HP/armor/regen, ranged swaps those for action speed and movement. Never split points between the two paths.

Quick Compare: Which Build to Pick

Melee
Burst + Sustain
Stack crit rate, crit multiplier, then defensive circle
Attack on enemy tells, block/dodge the rest
Lifesteal + AoE skills for mob packs
Best for: front-line bossing, wave clearing
Ranged
Consistent DPS + Kiting
Stack action speed first, then crit multiplier
Fire, reposition, repeat - never get hit
Fast base-animation weapons only, no slow heavies
Best for: high DPS uptime, kite-heavy maps

Build Steps

1
Route adjacent melee-crit nodes first

Chain every nearby crit rate and crit multiplier node in the skill tree. These multiply Power more efficiently than flat damage nodes of equivalent cost. Do not skip adjacent crit nodes to reach a distant damage node.

2
Route into the defensive circle immediately after

The HP, armor, regeneration, and protection nodes behind the crit cluster are mandatory for endgame bosses. Skipping the defensive circle is the most common reason melee builds fall apart at high difficulty.

3
Dark skill point order: crit rate - crit multiplier - move speed - HP

Skip marginal weapon damage nodes. Movement speed is third priority so you can reposition when regen is on cooldown. HP is last but still take it - do not stop at crit.

4
Gear: high base-Power melee weapons with crit scaling

Reroll and lock for Power + crit multipliers as primary stats. Armor and regen as secondaries. Use blocking-focused armor sets. Do not chase flat attack speed on melee gear - crit multiplier is more valuable per roll.

5
Skill loadout: Whirlwind (AoE) + War Cry + Shadow Step

Whirlwind with lifesteal clears mob packs. Set War Cry trigger to approximately 3 mobs for consistent uptime. Shadow Step doubles as a dodge and damage boost. Keep attacking nonstop in waves; target mages and archers first.

6
Boss play loop: attack on enemy tells, block/dodge otherwise

Use healing potions - they are faster than health skills and do not skip your attack animation. Keep moving with your movement speed node to reposition when regen is down.

1
Route through ranged-damage clusters, never skip action speed nodes

Action speed reduces attack and skill downtime. It boosts your effective DPS and XP/gold per hour more than any single damage stat at equivalent node cost. Take every action speed node on a clean path through your cluster.

2
Take Hunter and Onrush whenever route geometry allows

They compress travel and recovery time between packs and after skill use. This directly increases your damage uptime over a full run - which is what ranged builds optimize for.

3
Dark skill point order: crit rate - crit multiplier - move speed - HP (only if getting one-shot)

Skip armor entirely on ranged. Positioning should prevent most hits. The exception is if you are getting one-shot by specific boss abilities - add a single HP node then stop.

4
Gear: fast base-animation weapons with Power + action speed rolls

Fast firing speed beats higher tooltip damage on slow weapons for real DPS. Reroll for Power, crit multipliers, and action speed. Do not equip slow heavy ranged weapons even if their damage number looks higher.

5
Play loop: fire - reposition - repeat, stay outside swing arcs

Never stand still. After each burst, immediately move to reset distance from the enemy. Use your movement speed nodes to stay outside enemy attack range. Loot everything and maintain nonstop pressure between repositions.

6
Stack AoE and knockback range for waves

Range and knockback let you clear packs from distance. Same target priority as melee: kill mages and archers first, then frontliners.

Dark Skill Point Priority Reference

Priority Stat Melee Ranged
1st Crit Rate Always take first Always take first
1st Action Speed Lower priority Co-equal with crit rate
2nd Crit Multiplier Second priority Second priority
2nd Movement Speed Third, after defense Third, essential for kiting
3rd HP After crit + defensive circle Only if getting one-shot
Skip Armor Get from gear rerolls only Skip entirely
Skip Flat Weapon Damage Skip if adjacent to better node Skip if adjacent to better node

Common Mistakes to Avoid

!

Hybrid point splits. 1.4.18 specifically punishes splitting between melee and ranged nodes. Pick one path entirely and commit. A 60/40 split underperforms a 100/0 split in both categories.

!

Skipping the defensive circle on melee. Bosses outlast your burst if you do not have HP/armor/regen nodes. The defensive circle is not optional for endgame content - it is part of the core melee routing.

!

Choosing crit multiplier over action speed on ranged. When the choice is between them at equal cost, action speed wins for ranged. It is a bigger real-DPS gain due to uptime multiplier on all your other stats.

!

Using slow heavy ranged weapons. High tooltip damage does not matter if the animation locks you in place. Always pick the faster base-animation weapon, then reroll for Power and crit.

!

Burning Dark points on flat weapon damage. It scales poorly versus crit multiplier at the same node cost. Only take flat damage nodes if they are on the direct path to your next priority node.

!

Taking Cursed Pact too early. Without a complete sustain setup in place, Cursed Pact makes mobs too strong to survive. Build the defensive layer first, then consider the Pact for bonus power.

Universal rule for both builds: When a node choice is crit multiplier vs. small weapon damage, always take the multiplier. It scales better with Power in every late-game scenario.
