Grand Theft Auto VI Lucia and Jason Dual Protagonist Control
How to run Jason and Lucia as a working duo instead of treating GTA VI like GTA V's three separate lives. Switch mid-action, summon and split, mid-chase seat swap, and the relationship system that changes what the on-screen character will do.
You play one person at a time. The other is either with you as a partner or off living their own day. The switch is built for the same scene (car, heist, chase), not a map teleport. Dual mode means partner present plus instant seat or body swap, not two players in one skull.

2How to Switch
-
1
Hold Down on the D-pad
PC players expect the old character-select key or Alt-style bind.
-
2
A two-portrait selector appears
People also mention a heart between the portraits. That is the relationship readout, not decoration.
-
3
Cycle or select the other lead, release to complete the swap
3Mid-Chase and Mid-Heist Loop
-
1
Start the drive as whoever you want behind the wheel
-
2
When heat hits, switch to the passenger
You keep moving. AI or partner keeps the car on the road.
-
3
As passenger: shoot out the window or use the phone
That phone-in-the-passenger-seat beat is the example Rockstar's preview gave.
-
4
Switch back to the driver when you need a gap, a turn, or to dump the car
-
5
If the mission forces a swap, do not fight the lock
Finish the beat, then switch again when the lock lifts.
4Summon, Split, and Wanted-Level Plays
-
1
Bring them to you: Phone, call or text the partner, wait
They travel on their own. Then rob, hang out, or start a job together.
-
2
Split a chase: send one away and keep cops on the one you are controlling
Partner can text when they are clear. Use this instead of trying to outrun a six-star as a glued pair.
-
3
Switch seats on purpose in a quiet car
Let the other drive so you can sit, radio, phone. That is the break mode, not just a chase trick.
5Relationship Is Part of the Control Scheme
-
1
Romance is optional. They stay partners in crime either way.
You are not forced to date them to keep switching.
-
2
Bond goes up by time spent together outside missions, covering each other, not leaving them hanging
Story missions alone are not enough if you want the couple version of the story.
-
3
Ignore late-night lock up or going to bed texts and you take a hit
Same if one character is constantly dumped at home while the other rampages.
-
4
High bond: more shared prompts, better cover behavior, less arguing in the car
Hold hands is called out as a real contextual button, not a cutscene. Low bond: arguments, refused hand-offs, some couple actions close until you repair it. They do not break up as a crime pair.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Playing it like GTA V. Leaving Lucia in a motel for ten hours while Jason farms the map is the opposite of how this system is built. The unused lead is still in your story and will text, judge, or be unavailable the way you left them.
- Switching during a lock and assuming the game is bugged. Some missions disable the wheel on purpose. Wait for the beat to end.
- Staying driver-only in a chase. You are leaving the passenger gun unused. Swap.
- Starting a public robbery before the partner arrives. Summon first, then hit the store. The walk-in-on-the-robbery fantasy only works if both are actually in the area.
- Assuming a third analog character. Dual mode equals partner present plus instant seat or body swap. Not two players in one skull.
- Treating leak-era specials as locked in. Plan around roles, not rumored one-shot abilities.
