FF7 Rebirth Switch 2 Best Materia Build
Materia overload is real. Here is the community consensus on which materia to equip on every character, the best pairings for damage and sustain, AP leveling priority, and how to prepare for Hard Mode.
Equip on Every Character
These go on every party member regardless of role. Slot them first, then fill remaining slots with character-specific materia.
Blocking is king in Rebirth. Steadfast Block charges ATB on blocks. Precision Defense Focus widens perfect block windows. Practice blocking over dodging for most encounters.
Raw survivability and magic sustainability. Stack on tanks and mages as needed. These are cheap to level and always useful.
Essential for survival. Do not rely solely on items. Duplicate if possible so everyone has access without swapping.
Core Materia Pairings
Link blue support materia with green magic materia for powerful combos. These are the highest-impact pairings.
On weapons for damage, on armor for resistance or absorb. Most enemies have elemental weaknesses. Auto-applies the right element and levels up to absorb damage at high levels. Prioritize Fire and Ice early. Get multiples and level them heavily since they need tons of AP.
Turns single-target heals and buffs into party-wide effects. Huge for group fights and Hard Mode where efficiency matters. Magnify + Haste on Aerith is a community favorite.
Turns attacks into healing and MP recovery. Huge for long fights and Hard Mode. Sonic Boom and Plasma Discharge are standout Enemy Skills for offense plus sustain.
AP Leveling Priority
Focus AP on these materia first. They are AP-hungry and game-changing at high levels. Use AP Up materia if available.
-
1
Elemental variants (Fire/Ice, Lightning/Wind)
Most AP-intensive but most impactful. Level to max for damage absorb on armor. Duplicate so everyone has copies.
-
2
Magnify
Party-wide buffs and heals scale dramatically with levels. Priority for Hard Mode preparation.
-
3
HP Absorption and MP Absorption
Sustain loops become reliable at higher levels. Critical for Hard Mode where item use is restricted.
-
4
Swiftcast and Magic Efficiency / Focus
Swiftcast removes cast time for emergency heals. Magic Focus reduces MP cost. Both become essential endgame.
Character-Specific Setups
Key Decision Points
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Weapon vs Armor slot for Elemental | Weapon for offensive damage (exploit weaknesses). Armor for resistance or absorb (defend against enemy elements). Assess enemies first to decide. |
| Physical vs Magic build | Physical: First Strike, ATB Stagger, Chakra. Magic: Magic Up, Absorptions, spell spam. Hybrid often wins for flexibility across enemy types. |
| Normal vs Hard Mode | Normal: experiment freely, stockpile leveled materia. Hard: no items, so MP sustain and status immunity (Warding / Ribbon) become mandatory. Plan ahead. |
| Fight-specific tuning | No single build covers everything. Hard Mode and simulator fights require tailoring. Always use Assess to check weaknesses before committing. |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over-relying on healing on your active character. Enemies interrupt casts. Swap to a non-active party member for safer heals.
- Ignoring blocking and ATB generation. Dodging is slower and riskier than blocking in most encounters. Steadfast Block is mandatory.
- Wasting AP on low-value materia early. Gravity and Petrify are often resisted. Item Economizer is useless on Hard Mode. Focus AP on Elemental, Magnify, and Absorptions.
- Not duplicating key materia. Forces constant swapping between characters. Level multiple copies of Healing, HP Up, and Elemental.
- Using unassessed loadouts. Always cast Assess on new enemies to check weaknesses and resistances before committing to a strategy.
