Dumb Ways to Build: 4-Player Crossplay Proximity Chat Guide
How to set up 1-4 player crossplay co-op in Dumb Ways to Build across PS5, Xbox, and Steam. Room Code only, no matchmaking. Enable proximity voice, pick a host, and avoid launch-day mistakes.

Proximity Chat
Co-op
Core goal: Get 1-4 friends into the same online job on Steam, PS5, and Xbox with proximity voice working. There is no random matchmaking and no couch co-op. The whole party is Room Code only.
What You Need Before Anyone Hosts
- 1Everyone owns the game on their own platform (~$7.99).
- 2PS5: PS Plus is required for online play.
- 3Xbox: Game Pass Core or Ultimate is required for online play.
- 4Steam: no extra sub.
- 5Online only. Two people on one TV with two controllers will not work.
- 6Mic enabled on each device. Proximity voice is built into the game; you do not need Discord for in-world distance audio (you can still use Discord as a backup if voice fails).
1Form a 4-Player Crossplay Crew
- 1One person hosts. Anyone can host (Steam, PS5, or Xbox). Open the game, go to co-op / create room, and note the Room Code on screen.
- 2Host shares the code in Discord/text. Do not stream or screenshot the code unless Streamer Mode is on (Streamer Mode hides the code and player names so randoms cannot crash the lobby).
- 3Everyone else joins. Open the game, Join, Enter Room Code, type the code exactly. Cross-play is on by default across Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. You do not friend each other on PSN/Xbox/Steam first.
- 4Confirm all names appear in the lobby (max 4 total). Then start the Crisis Job together.
- 5Test proximity chat immediately. Walk toward a teammate and talk. Volume should drop as you move away.
2If Proximity Voice Does Not Work
- 1Check in-game voice / mic permission (console privacy + in-game audio settings).
- 2Make sure you are not muted and the host is not in Streamer Mode in a way that confuses testing.
- 3Some ISPs are already reporting connect + voice problems; VPN or a different host platform is what players are trying.
Key Decisions
| Decision | What to do |
|---|---|
| Who hosts? | Pick the most stable connection. If one platform's voice is flaky, have a Steam player host and have consoles join. |
| Solo vs co-op? | Solo is fully playable; objects can be frozen mid-air so you can nail them without a crew. Co-op is the intended chaos. |
| Discord vs in-game voice? | Use in-game proximity for the joke (screams fade with distance). Keep Discord for "we can't hear you at all" fallback, but then you lose spatial audio. |
| Streaming? | Turn Streamer Mode on before going live so viewers cannot steal the Room Code. |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Waiting for public / open / random lobbies — they do not exist. Room Code only.
- Assuming couch co-op works because it is "4 player co-op." It is online-only.
- Sharing the Room Code on stream without Streamer Mode.
- Forgetting console online subscriptions, then thinking crossplay is broken.
- Expecting platform friends lists (PSN/Xbox/Steam) to invite across platforms. The code is the invite.
If Voice or Join Fails
- 1Regenerate a new room (duplicate codes were a known issue and got a fix).
- 2Everyone fully quit to dashboard / desktop and rejoin with a fresh code.
- 3Swap host platform.
- 4Confirm every client is updated (launch-day patches already mention voice/connect and duplicate codes).
